9:30 AM-3:30 PM

(Check-In starts at 9:30 AM)

Where:         Pacific Palms Resort

(Majestic Ballroom)

One Industry Hills Parkway

City of Industry, CA 91744

Our belief is that Los Angeles has a unique business environment and opportunities, quite different from other places such as Silicon Valley. This event is to network people in this environment and to discuss how it operates. We believe it is driven by i) trade with asia, ii) its Asian scientists, artists and entrepreneurs, and iii) its status as the premier media, and hence branding capital of the world. For example, did you know the following?

1.     L.A. has largest Port traffic in the US (San Pedro/Long Breach/Los Angeles handles more than $300 billion a year, 120 billion from china). This is about 4 times as many Cargo Units (container units) per year as the Port of Oakland/San Francisco.

2.     L.A. has cities essentially dedicated to business development and incubation such as the City of Industry and City of Commerce.

  • City of Industry- Home to 2,500 businesses and 80,000 jobs, but only 219 residents at the 2010 census. The headquarters for Alta Dena, CSC Enterprise Corp., Hot Topic, Newegg.com, Metro United Bank (a subsidiary of MetroCorp Bancshares), DUB, Emtek Products, Public Health Foundation Enterprises, Inc., Utility Trailer Manufacturing Company, Medlock Industries, Yum-Yum Donuts, and Engineering Model Associates/Plastruct are among some of the premier companies located in Industry. Other businesses with a major presence in the City of Industry include: Biostar, DIRECTV, FedEx, Kellwood Company, Micro-Star International, Lee Kum Kee USA Los Angeles Office. This is a garage start-up haven on a massive scale.
3.     L.A. is growing fashion leader due to its i) ports and trade with Asia, ii) artists and designers, and iii) cutting edge fashion technologies. Witness the many buildings that serve as incubators to this industry in downtown LA and hidden throughout San Gabriel Valley.
4.     Companies such as Google, Yahoo, Electronic Arts, Activision, eHarmony have set up significant presences in L.A. to access its artistic and branding resources. And many special effects, mobile phone and game companies were founded or have moved here.
5.     L.A. has significant technological expertise and centers, from its universities (Caltech, USC, and UCLA for example), to its aviation/space focus (Boeing, Raytheon, Direct TV, SpaceX, JPL), to its auto industry focus (Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design, Honda, Toyota, Fisker, etc.) and its focus on branded consumer products.
6.     The largest angel group in the country, Tech Coast Angels, with over 300 members, is here. Adding Pasadena Angels and others, we have a very large angel community. With more than 11 speakers and perhaps as many as 34 round-table topic discussions (during our Bazaar), there is a lot to explore here and we have put together a great event.  See more details below, and for the most up to date information, our website at www.scmj.org/events.  Thank you. This event will be focused on networking the key constituents of the technology and start-up communities in SoCal. We will have a buffet style lunch with open tables to promote networking, with each table (up to 34) having different topics of conversation.  A list of table topics will be updated, but in addition to our speakers, we expect to have tables discussing, during our “Bazaar” (see below), the following topics and more:
  • Venture financing
  • Trade and technology opportunities in Taiwan and asia
  • Legal, Insurance, and Risk Management issues of Start Ups/Technology Companies
  • Cross border transactions
  • Bank financing-loan and factor financing for start-ups and mid-size companies
  • University sponsored entrepreneurialism
  • Incubators and accelerators

The event will be organized in the following key segments:

1.     Dragon Bytes (9:30am to 11:15am) - 7 Mini Talks (More details to follow):

  • Eric Golden : “Tales from an Entrepreneur – a winner of two fast pitch events”
  • Lyndi Wu, Manager Google acquisitions - “What’s hot and What’s not”
  • David Kwan: “Don’t let your past determine your future”
  • Stephen Liu : “Asian/Bamboo networks, Asians in LA and entrepreneurship”
  • Clifton Chang: “Investing in Startups: do you Bet on the Horse or the Jockey?”
  • Ming Lo: ”Is China the Next Financial Crisis?”
  • Way-Ting Chen : “Possibly about actualizing your organization’s strategy or social entrepreneurship”

2.     History and Future of Monte Jade (11:15 am to 11:50 am)

3.     Bazaar (11:50 am to 1:20 pm):

  • In this segment, buffet lunch will be served and at each of the approximately 34 open tables, a led discussion will be occur on various topics (see above).

4.     Panel Discussion (1:20 pm to 2:15):

  • The Los Angeles Incubator/Acceleration/Office-for-a-day/internet cafe start-up Environment -  TBA

5.     Keynote Speaker (2:15 pm to 3:30 pm): Dr. Frank Su

  • Climate change is real, but the best solutions may not be what many people think, and you can help to turn things around.  An evaluation of various technological solutions.
